A lot of Lake Superior is ice-free. Here’s a visible satellite image from 4:45 PM CDT Today, April 14, 2015 per college of dupage website. Only the Eastern and Northern shores of Lake Superior continue to be ice covered, also around the Keweenaw Peninsula.

High pressure of 1022-1024mb covered the Great Lakes and Ontario Today. Sunshine and more very mild temperatures in the Northland Today with highs mainly in the 60s with a few spots around the Brainerd Lakes up around 70. Winds were light and variable, or out of the south/east at 5-15 mph with higher gusts.

Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight through Wednesday Night (April 14-15)
Low pressure along with an upper level trough over the Rockies Today will move slowly toward the east during this period while high pressure stays off to our east. Clear to partly cloudy skies will continue in our area with low temperatures Tonight and Wednesday Night in the 30s and 40s with highs on Wednesday in the 60s to around 70 degrees although it will be cooler along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Winds will be out of the south or southeast at 10 to 20 mph with gusts over 30 mph from Wednesday into Wednesday Evening.

Thursday through Saturday (April 16-18)
A weakening cold front passes through the region on Thursday which will be followed by a more potent system which drops southeast out of Canada on Friday. Only small chances for a few showers in parts of the Northland on Thursday and Friday with dry weather expected on Saturday. High temperatures from Thursday through Saturday are forecast to be in the 50s and 60s with a few spots possibly reaching 70. Low temperatures Thursday Night will be in the 40s with lows Friday Night in the 30s and 40s.

There is a chance for some rain across Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin during the Sunday-Monday time frame (19th-20th) as a low pressure system moves through the Upper Midwest. The remainder of this period could feature additional chances for spotty light rain and or snow showers, but nothing significant is expected at this time. Near to below average temperatures are forecast from the 19th-24th.
