Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Date:  July 24, 2015

Low pressure of 1006mb was over Northern Ontario late this afternoon with a cold front extending southwest of that low through West Central Minnesota.  A round of showers and thunderstorms affected parts of the Northland earlier in the day — Some severe weather did occur early this morning over the Brainerd Lakes region with quite a few reports of damaging winds.  High temperatures today were in the mid 70s to low 80s with very muggy dew points in the mid 60s to low 70s.  Winds today were out of the west or southwest at 10 to 20 mph.

Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (July 24)

A cold front will exit the Northland to the south/east before Midnight.  Spotty showers or thunderstorms are possible until this front clears the area.  The risk for severe thunderstorms continues although this is a pretty marginal risk and mainly in parts of Northwest Wisconsin.  The atmosphere is slowly destabilizing this afternoon with CAPE likely to peak in the 1000-2000 j/kg range during the next few hours in Eastern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.  Winds aloft are on the strong side and there is also enough wind shear in place for storm organization so will just have to wait and see how things play out during the next 4-6 hours.  The Overnight hours should be dry under partly cloudy skies.  Low temperatures tonight will be in the 50s and 60s with winds turning to the west or northwest at 10 to 20 mph.

Saturday and Saturday Night (July 25)

Warm! An area of high pressure will be moving through the Upper Midwest.  Partly cloudy skies are expected with highs on Saturday in the 80s with lows Saturday night in the 60s to around 70 degrees.  Winds will be out of the south or west at 10 to 20 mph.  Just a small threat for a few spotty showers and thunderstorms mainly in Western-Northern areas.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Sunday through Tuesday (July 26-28)

Looks mainly dry Sunday and Monday although a spotty thunderstorm can’t be ruled out on both days.  A few showers or thunderstorms on Tuesday as a low pressure system along with a warm front and cold front move into the Upper Midwest.  Warm temperatures to continue during this period with highs from Sunday through Tuesday in the 80s with a few 90s even possible.  Lows Sunday night and Monday night will be in the 60s to around 70.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(July 29-August 3)

Mainly dry weather is expected from the 29th-30th.  Might be dealing with a few showers or thunderstorms at times from July 31-August 2.  Near to above average temperatures are expected during the long range.
