Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight through Sunday night (September 19-20)
Dry! High pressure remains to our south/southeast through this period. Expect clear to partly cloudy skies with perhaps a little more cloudiness from time to time on Sunday. Not as cold tonight with lows in the 40s to lower 50s, highs on Sunday in the 60s and 70s with lows Sunday night in the 40s and 50s. Winds will be out of the south or southwest at 10 to 20 mph.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: Medium to High.
Monday through Wednesday (September 21-23)
A cold front will move east into the Northland Monday night, this boundary will settle south of our area on Tuesday while stalling out and turning into stationary front…This boundary will then remain over or to the south of the Northland on Wednesday.
Dry on Monday and Tuesday. A few showers or isolated thunderstorms could develop Monday night. A chance for rain/scattered thunderstorms from late Tuesday night into Wednesday. Some of the rain on Wednesday could be heavy at times. Note: The computer models disagree a bit on where the heavy rain sets up on Wednesday. It will likely depend on where the frontal boundary is at that time, if it’s further south, then the heaviest rain could remain south of the Northland, but if the front is over Central Minnesota, then the potential for heavy rain could increase in parts of the Northland. Stay tuned.
High temperatures on Monday will be in the 70s to lower 80s. Lows Monday night will be in the 50s to lower 60s. Highs on Tuesday and Wednesday will be in the 60s and 70s with lows Tuesday night in the 50s. Note: An east wind will likely develop Tuesday night and Wednesday as high pressure builds into Ontario this will probably lead to cooler temperatures near Lake Superior by midweek.
Long Range Forecast – Confidence: Medium to High.
(September 24-29)
A chance for rain and isolated thunderstorms continues on Thursday (24th) due to a frontal boundary which will remain over the Upper Midwest. This boundary could linger close to our area on Friday (25th) with more chances for rain showers. Another chance for some rain sometime Sunday-Monday (27th-28th) Near to above average temperatures are forecast from the 24th-29th although it will likely be cooler near Lake Superior especially from the 24th-26th.
