25-50% color change south and southwest of Duluth so a trip to Mahtowa, Moose Lake, McGregor, Finlayson, Hinckley or Askov could be a good one for some decent color this weekend.

Not much color yet along the North Shore/immediate Lake Superior shoreline with generally 10% or less color change as of September 18.  Around 10-25% color change over most of Northern Minnesota.

Quite a bit of what is showing up on radar isn’t reaching the ground this evening but the green and yellow colors do represent some rain that is actually reaching the ground.

Forecasted rainfall totals ending at 7 AM Saturday per 20z RAP model.  Parts of Northwest Wisconsin could pick up a tenth to quarter inch of rain tonight with trace amounts of rain possible in Eastern Minnesota.

Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Date:  September 18, 2015

A much cooler and less humid day over the Northland with highs today in the 50s and 60s which is near to a bit below normal for mid September.  Some sun earlier in the day gave way to quite a bit of mid/high level cloudiness.  There’s been some light rain and drizzle which has been moving east/northeast through parts of Western, Central, Eastern, and Southern Minnesota this afternoon…A rather strong disturbance moving E/NE out of South Dakota is responsible in this light rainfall event that has hit portions of Minnesota today.

Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (September 18)

High pressure will be centered to our west-southwest tonight while a low pressure disturbance continues to move E/NE through the Upper Midwest and Central Great Lakes region.  Expect some rain and drizzle tonight in parts of Northwest Wisconsin with some light rain also possible over Eastern Minnesota.  Northern Minnesota and the North Shore should remain dry tonight.  Mostly cloudy to partly cloudy skies are expected with lows in the 40s to lower 50s with 30s possible in parts of Northern Minnesota.  Winds will be out of the north, northwest, or west at 5 to 15 mph.

Saturday and Saturday night (September 19)

High pressure will cover the region this period.  Partly to mostly sunny skies on Saturday with highs in the 60s to lower 70s.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies for Saturday night with lows in the 40s and 50s.  Winds on Saturday will be out of the northwest or southwest at 10 to 20 mph with southwest winds Saturday night at 5 to 15 mph.  Note:  Most of the Northland should be dry on Saturday but a few spotty showers cannot be ruled out during the afternoon-evening hours mainly over the Arrowhead and far Northern portions of Minnesota.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Sunday through Tuesday (September 20-22)

Dry on Sunday with highs in the 60s and 70s, lows Sunday night will be in the 50s.  Monday and Tuesday also look dry for most of us but isolated showers or thunderstorms could develop as a cold front pushes slowly south/east through the area.  High temperatures on Monday and Tuesday are expected to be in the 60s and 70s with lows Monday night in the 50s.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  Medium.

(September 23-28)

Have to keep an eye on Wednesday-Thursday (23rd-24th) for possible showers or thunderstorms as a frontal boundary stalls out somewhere over or to the south of the Northland – If enough moisture and instability can build north, then we could be dealing with a potential for heavy rainfall and perhaps a few strong storms around the middle of next week.

Another chance for showers sometime during the 26th-28th time frame.

Near to above average temperatures are forecast from the 23rd-28th although we could have a rather strong lake breeze from Wednesday-Friday which could keep it cooler near Lake Superior.
