Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (November 28)
Clear and quiet as high pressure remains over the Upper Midwest. Low temperatures will fall into the single digits and teens with subzero low temperatures possible in the typical cold spots. Winds will be out of the west or southwest at 5 to 15 mph during the evening turning light and variable later in the night.
Sunday and Sunday night (November 29)
Still quiet under partly to mostly cloudy skies. High pressure will gradually shift off to the east during this period. Highs tomorrow will be in the 20s and 30s with lows tomorrow night in the teens and 20s. Winds will be out of the south, southeast or southwest at 10 to 15 mph.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: Medium to High.
Monday through Wednesday (November 30-December 2)
Still monitoring a potential snow event which could affect the Northland from Monday afternoon/evening through Tuesday night.
A strong upper level low pressure system currently spinning away over the North Central Rockies is expected to track east/northeast into the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes during the late Monday-early Wednesday time frame.
An area of surface low pressure is also expected to develop somewhere over the Central Plains on Monday with the track of that low toward the northeast and into the Great Lakes by Tuesday evening.
Temperatures aloft will be sufficiently cold enough for snow although surface temperatures will probably be real close to the freezing mark if not a few degrees above freezing especially near Lake Superior. Strong lift associated with the upper level system should help to keep temperatures cold enough to support snow the way it looks now but this could be a heavy wet snowfall especially near Lake Superior.
As for timing…Snow should spread south-north across Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin from late Monday afternoon through Monday night. Tuesday looks rather snowy at this time with lingering light snow and flurries probably continuing Tuesday night before the snow wraps up on Wednesday.
High temperatures are expected to be in the 20s and 30s on Monday and mainly in the 30s for Tuesday and Wednesday. Low temperatures Monday night and Tuesday night will be in the 20s and 30s. Note: A little odd not to see it turn colder behind this early week snow event, in fact temperatures may warm up a bit after the storm exits.
Long Range Forecast – Confidence: High.
(December 3-8)
Above average temperatures are forecast during the long range with no major storms showing up from the 3rd-8th of December.
