Note: 16 days so far this summer with a high temperature of at least 80 degrees at the Duluth Airport. The average for the summer season is 23 days. Last summer had 29 days with a high temperature of at least 80 degrees.

*6:54 PM CDT 8/8/17: HAIL. 0.75 inch. Virginia, MN 2 SE (St. Louis County) The largest hail stones were dime sized. Hail began at 6:43 PM and ended at 7 PM.
Weather Synopsis
Rain for some, dry for others. An area of low pressure was over southeast North Dakota at 4 PM today with a frontal boundary extending from northern Minnesota back through the eastern Dakotas. Occasional showers and scattered thunderstorms have been occurring today in northern Minnesota and also in a small portion of far northern Wisconsin. There was also a separate area of rain that was moving through far southern portions of northwest Wisconsin late this afternoon (Mainly around the Hayward Lakes area) Dry weather continued today in the Twin Ports and surrounding areas with the bulk of the rain so far staying west, north and east of Duluth (Interesting how that works) Highs today were cooler than the past few days thanks to the clouds and showers with highs today in the 60s with a few locations getting into the low to mid 70s.
Occasional showers and scattered thunderstorms will linger over northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin tonight with heavy downpours and lightning being the main threats from this activity. Low pressure is forecast to move east out of the northern Plains tonight with the low passing through central Minnesota later in the night. Lift provided by the low as well as a cold front which moves south/east will lead to some wet weather for tonight. In addition, there will also be a fairly strong low level jet out of the south at up to 40 knots aimed at eastern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin tonight which may help to focus some heavier rainfall in those areas. Lows tonight will range from the lower 50s to lower 60s.
Low pressure and cold front will exit the Northland to the east on Thursday but mostly cloudy skies with lingering scattered showers and some drizzle will continue in our area. Could be some brief downpours as well but coverage should be fairly isolated compared to what occurred this afternoon. Highs Thursday are forecast to range from around 60 to 70 degrees with the mildest temperatures in western-northern portions on the Minnesota side of the Northland.
Note: A northwest flow aloft is expected for the weekend with broad upper level troughing covering the upper Midwest and western Great Lakes. Usually with this type of setup we’d see spotty showers pop up during the afternoon-evening hours, but this doesn’t look to be the case this time around, in fact Friday and Saturday look mainly dry in the Northland, but then on Sunday there could be a few isolated showers that develop in parts of the area during the afternoon hours. Highs Friday, Saturday and Sunday are expected to range from the upper 60s to upper 70s, not bad at all as we approach mid August.
