Weather Synopsis

Smoke filled Northland skies today while clouds increased over north central Minnesota while sunshine was in abundance across northwest Wisconsin.  Highs today ranged from the middle 60s to around 70 degrees.

Low pressure over Manitoba Province along with a warm front and cold front which were over the Dakotas this afternoon will move slowly east into the Northland through Saturday.  30-40 knot southerly low level jet ahead of this system will advect deeper moisture into the Northland tonight with PWATS rising to between 1.20″ and 1.50″.  Rain showers with some brief heavier downpours will move west to east across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin tonight through early Saturday morning.  Note:  There isn’t too much instability around tonight but still could be an isolated thunderstorm.  Warmer overnight lows tonight compared to the past few nights due to the clouds, southerly flow and showers.  Lows tonight will be in the 50s to around 60 degrees.

Clouds are expected to linger over the area Saturday morning but some sunshine should develop in the afternoon.  This clearing combined with warmer temperatures near the surface, colder temperatures aloft coupled with the surface boundaries loitering over the area could lead to a few showers and thunderstorms redeveloping in parts of the Northland Saturday afternoon.  Winds in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere will be on the strong side, but there is no wind shear (Change of wind direction with height) plus it looks like the deeper moisture will move south/east of our area by Saturday afternoon so severe weather looks unlikely Saturday afternoon but there still could be a few storms around with a threat of lightning and brief downpours.  Highs Saturday are forecast to be in the 70s.

Sunday looks like the warmest day of the holiday weekend with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s, possibly even a few middle 80s in western parts of the area.  Winds will be out of the west/southwest with low pressure off to our W/NW…This all leads to a pretty mild day for our area.  A few showers and thunderstorms could develop Sunday night as the area of low pressure and cold front pass through the upper Midwest.  Note:  Isolated strong to severe storms could develop Sunday night especially over east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.

A cooling trend begins Labor Day with highs ranging from 60 to 70 degrees with the coolest temps in far northern Minnesota.  Clouds, some sun along with a few showers can be expected on Monday with a northwest wind gusting 15-25 mph.
