Radar loop ending at 4:35 PM CST, December 13, 2017.  Lake effect snow showers continued late this afternoon but this band which had been impacting the North Shore most of the afternoon is starting to shift more to the South Shore as winds shift out of the north.  Note:  Expect lingering snow showers in Duluth until around 6 PM with less than an inch of additional accumulation.  Roads are in bad shape in the Twin Ports area so use extreme caution if you have to travel tonight.

Note:  Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 6 AM CST Wednesday for Bayfield, Ashland and Iron County along the South Shore of Lake Superior in northwest Wisconsin.  Snowfall of around 2 inches is expected with snow covered and slippery roads and reduced visibilities at times.

Here’s a water vapor satellite loop of today’s storm system that impacted portions of the upper Midwest and Great Lakes.

Note:  Forecasting these winter weather events is always a challenge, sometimes the forecast will bust too high or too low on snowfall amounts.  Lake Superior played a role in producing more snow in parts of Duluth and Superior today than what was forecast to fall – The clipper itself also tracked a little farther north, and the resultant snow band from that clipper also ended up a little farther north than what was expected.  Snowfall amounts from this clipper were higher than what was forecast for east central Minnesota into parts of northwest Wisconsin earlier today.  Oh the joys of winter weather forecasting!

Weather Synopsis

Low pressure of 994mb was over southern Lake Michigan at 3 PM today with an area of 120 meter 12 hour 500mb height falls covering much of the upper Midwest and western Great Lakes this afternoon.  Snow continued to fall late this afternoon mainly around Lake Superior where good convergence, and a good contrast between 850mb temps and lake water temps has produced a fair amount of lake enhanced/effect snow today along the North Shore of Lake Superior, the setup for this lake effect snow is starting to become less favorable though as of late this afternoon as winds shift around from the E-NE to the N.

Tonight:  High pressure builds in from the north while low pressure tracks from southern Lake Michigan toward Washington D.C.  Snow showers will persist through the night along the South Shore of Lake Superior while flurries and snow showers over other parts of the Northland diminish this evening.  Lows tonight ranging from around 10 below to 10 above zero.

Thursday:  Could see a few flurries or light snow showers at times as a weak low pressure system passes north/east of the Northland while dragging a cold front through our area Thursday night.  Highs will be in the teens to around 20 degrees.

Note:  The next best chance for perhaps an inch or so of snow comes Saturday as an area of low pressure tracks east out of the northern Plains, more on this tomorrow.
