Cold weekend ahead; light snow/flurries linger into Saturday morning, heavier snow in far northeast Minnesota and along the South Shore tonight and Saturday

Winter Storm Warning (pink) remains in effect until 6 AM Saturday for the North Shore of Lake Superior including Two Harbors, Silver Bay and Grand Marais.

Winter Weather Advisory (purple) remains in effect until 6 AM Saturday including Crane Lake, Ely and Isabella in northeast Minnesota. And until 6 AM Sunday for Hurley and Gile in northwest Wisconsin.

Snowfall accumulations across the Northland today have generally been around an inch or two per National Weather Service reports.

1.0″ of snow has fallen so far today at the Duluth Airport (thru 6 PM Friday)

Additional snowfall accumulations through Saturday evening will range from 2 to 4 inches in far northeast Minnesota and over eastern portions of northwest Wisconsin with 4 to 6 inches of snow possible around the Tofte area along the North Shore.

4-8+ inches of snow is possible through Saturday evening for the Hurley and Gile areas in northwest Wisconsin.

Additional snowfall accumulations for the rest of the area will range from less than an inch up to two inches through Saturday morning.

…Weather Summary…

Low pressure will remain over the Great Lakes through Saturday evening while a trough extends west of that low into northern Wisconsin. Some snow will continue into Saturday in far northeast Minnesota and also along the South Shore of Lake Superior in northwest Wisconsin. The rest of the area can expect some flurries and light snow showers tonight into early Saturday.

Mostly cloudy to partly cloudy skies are expected for tonight with lows in the teens in northwest Wisconsin to the single digits below to single digits above zero in northern Minnesota. Winds tonight will be out of the east, northwest or southwest at 10 to 15 mph.

Highs Saturday will be in the single digits and teens under partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies. Winds Saturday will be out of the north or northwest at 10 to 20 mph.

Frigid temperatures for Saturday night as lows fall into the teens and 20s below zero, but it will be a little warmer along the South Shore (lows in the single digits and teens above zero)
