Wednesday afternoon Wildfire Update

Greenwood Fire

  • Greenwood fire has grown to an estimated 3200 acres as of early Wednesday afternoon and is 0% contained
  • A total of 42 personnel
  • Greenwood fire is located 10 miles southwest of Isabella, Minnesota
  • Fire will continue to spread north through Friday as southerly winds continue
  • Structures and infrastructure will continue to be threatened near County Road 2, Stony Lake, McDougal Lake, and Highway 1
  • A public meeting will be held Thursday night at 6 PM at the Wolf Ridge Environment Center in Finland. It will be broadcast on Facebook as well

There are also two other wildfires burning farther northeast of the Greenwood Fire.

The Whelp Fire was at 15 acres as of early Wednesday afternoon, and the John Elk Fire was at 3 acres.

The Whelp Fire has caused a closure in the Boundary Waters northwest of Sawbill Lake.


Fire Danger is rated as Extreme (red) Very High (orange) and High (yellow) for today, Wednesday, August 18, 2021.
