Monday evening Greenwood, John Ek and Whelp Fire Updates; Pre-evacuations for the Gunflint Trail

8:15 PM Monday, 8/23/2021

Greenwood Fire has grown to 10,500 acres per latest update from InciWeb and FireMappers data.

0% contained as of early Monday evening.

A wind shift to the east will occur on Tuesday, this will keep the fire from spreading any farther east on Tuesday, but could cause the fire to spread farther west or northwest.

Winds on Wednesday are forecast to shift out of the northwest, this could cause the fire to spread farther southeast.

John Ek fire was at 1,500 acres as of Monday evening, August 23, 2021.

Also of note is the fact I’ve been calling the John Ek fire, the John Elk fire for days now, so my apologies on that, hopefully I will get it right from now on.

Per update from the U.S. Forest Service – Superior National Forest

-Residents of the Gunflint Trail located from the Seagull end to the South end of Loon Lake will be notified tonight of pre-evacuation status by the fire department and local sherrifs.

There is no evacuation as of Monday evening

-Turn on sprinklers
-Pack medications
-Gather pets
-Pack up valuables

If you choose to pre-evacuate, please stop in at the YMCA in Grand Marais and check in with law enforcement.
