We’ve reached mid-February and the days continue to get longer for those that are sick of winter which I’m sure are quite a few of us by now. Will begin that transition from winter to spring in a few more weeks, which may include a snowstorm or two, or six, I mean this is the Northland!
Cold tonight, some snow and milder temperatures Tuesday-early Wednesday, another shot of arctic air Thursday-Friday, another round of snow Friday, warmer this weekend, followed by what may be a rather snowy stretch early to mid-next week, but whether or not this snow is anything significant or just more minor snow events remains to be seen. GFS model appears to be all in on a significant winter storm impacting parts of the upper Midwest and western Great Lakes ~February 22-24, but the European model says hold on just a minute.
Temperatures tanked big time this morning thanks to the fresh dusting of snow we got Sunday evening which was followed by clearing skies and nearly calm winds after Midnight, this allowed for temperatures to crash well below zero once again in much of the Northland this morning.
Temperature at the Duluth Airport dropped to -20 F this morning, this is the 6th night so far this winter where the temperature has fallen to -20 or lower at the Duluth Airport (normal for an entire winter Dec-Feb is 4 nights) Note: In 2021, we had 8 nights with a low of -20 or colder at Duluth, and all of those came in the month of February.

Temperatures will drop below zero once again tonight in the Northland with lows ranging from around -5 to -20 degrees, but even colder temperatures are possible in the typical cold spots up north.

Highs Tuesday in the Northland will range from the mid-teens to mid 20s which believe it or not is still slightly below average around here in mid-February.

Southerly winds will lead to a warm air advection pattern in our area on Tuesday while an area of low pressure and a cold front move east out of the Northern Plains — This system will go on to produce some snow Tuesday into early Wednesday, with snow chances highest across northern Minnesota and in the Arrowhead.
Lake effect snow showers/lake enhanced snow is also likely Tuesday and Tuesday night along the North Shore of Lake Superior, especially over Cook County from Tofte and Lutsen, northeast to Grand Marais and Hovland.
For Duluth — Some snow is possible for a time between about 11 AM Tuesday and 2 PM Tuesday with a few more snow showers possible Tuesday night. Total snowfall accumulations <1″.
Simulated radar forecast valid Midnight tonight to 6 AM Wednesday (snow in blue colors)

Note: There is a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 9 AM Tuesday to 3 AM Wednesday for southern Cook County in the Arrowhead of Minnesota including the cities of Tofte, Lutsen and Grand Marais.
Here’s my snowfall forecast thru 6 AM Wednesday.

We’ve got another clipper lurking for late this week which may bring another round of snow to the Northland on Friday the way it looks now.

Snowfall from Sunday night’s clipper.
Duluth Airport picked up 0.6″ of snow Sunday night.
One of the higher totals in the Northland was reported 7 miles WSW Pine River, MN with 3.5″ of snow last night.

Thanks for reading!
