Some sun Easter morning followed by some snow Sunday evening-Monday morning, winter storm watch in effect for the North Shore; More rain/snow chances midweek

An active pattern returns to the Northland over the next week or so with several chances for precipitation ahead through at least April 25.

We should have some sunshine in the Northland Easter morning, but clouds will be on the increase during the day as a low-pressure system approaches from the Northern Plains. This system will bring another round of accumulating snow to northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin from late Sunday afternoon through Monday morning with some lingering snow or rain showers continuing into Monday afternoon.

A brief break in precipitation for Tuesday, but another system moving east out of the Northern Rockies and Northern Plains is forecast to bring more rain or wet snow to the Northland from Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon. This midweek system does look a bit warmer however compared to the system Sunday night, so this could be more of a rain event than a snow event in most of the Northland the way it looks now.

Snow spreads from west to east across the Northland from mid or late Sunday afternoon into early Sunday evening with the steadiest snow expected Sunday night through early Monday morning followed by lingering snow and or rain showers during the day Monday.

For Duluth — Snow begins early Sunday evening ~5 PM to 8 PM, snow ends ~4 AM to 6 AM Monday, but scattered showers of snow or rain will likely continue through most of the day Monday.

Simulated radar forecast valid Noon Sunday through 7 PM Monday.

Here’s my snowfall accumulation forecast for Sunday evening through Noon Monday.

For Duluth — About 1 to 2 inches of snow with a low chance for up to 3 inches on top of the hill. Bulk of this snow falls Sunday night through about daybreak on Monday.

Note: Expect snow and slush covered roads in much of the Northland Sunday night into Monday morning but road conditions should improve by Monday afternoon.

500mb forecast valid April 17 through April 21, 2022.

Attention will focus on a larger scale pattern change from around April 22-25 with a deeper trough digging into the Rockies while a ridge builds across the Plains and Great Lakes. The pattern for next weekend is showing signs that it could be quite active across the upper Midwest with waves of rain along with a potential for some thunderstorms, and possibly even some freezing rain or wet snow at times depending on how things setup. Stay tuned!

All of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin could get 2 inches or more of precipitation over about the next two weeks.
