A pretty active weather pattern in place today considering that it’s mid-June!

We have one system lifting quickly northeast through Minnesota and Wisconsin today bringing some showers to northeast Minnesota while heavier showers and some thunderstorms affect parts of northern Wisconsin, and farther to the south there’s a potential for severe thunderstorms including a risk for a few tornadoes through this evening from south-central to central to northeast Wisconsin.

The other system of interest continues to spin slowly east across southeast Saskatchewan today.

Here’s a look at the water vapor loop from Wednesday, June 15, 2022.

This is quite an amplified pattern for this time of the year.

…POSSIBLE HEAT WAVE LATE THIS WEEKEND/EARLY NEXT WEEK…

A strong upper-level ridge (heat dome) looks to become established once again across the Central Plains extending north into the Northern Plains and upper Midwest this weekend into early next week before the ridge flattens a bit later next week.

Note: Along with the hot temperatures late this weekend/early next week will come an increase in humidity for Sunday and Monday as dew points climb into the 60s and possibly even into the 70s in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.

500mb height anomaly forecast valid Saturday, June 18 through Tuesday, June 21, 2022.

SATURDAY, JUNE 18

An easterly wind is expected Saturday which will lead to cooler temperatures near Lake Superior and in Duluth (highs in the 50s) while farther inland will see highs in the 70s Saturday.

SUNDAY, JUNE 19

The real warming begins on Sunday with highs in the mid 80s to low 90s over much of the Northland, but it does look like will keep an onshore wind closer to Lake Superior which will lead to cooler daytime highs ranging from the mid 50s to low 70s (coolest temps closest to the lake)

MONDAY, JUNE 20

This upcoming heat wave looks to peak on Monday with daytime highs in the 90s in much of the Northland with a chance for a few 100-degree temperatures especially over western parts of the area (International Falls to Brainerd Lakes)

90s are also expected in Duluth on Monday as winds will be more out of the S-SW, and if they are strong enough this will help keep the onshore wind (cooler lake air) away from the Twin Ports, but since this is still several days away, we could see the wind direction change which could lead to Monday being a lot cooler than what it looks like now in the Twin Ports.
