An area of low pressure over western Wisconsin late this afternoon will hook northwest reaching areas between Duluth and Ely in northeast Minnesota around daybreak Friday, and then will see this low drop back toward the south a bit during the day Friday before finally exiting off to the east over Lake Superior Friday night/Saturday.

This slow-moving system will keep the weather on the snowy, slushy and messy side through Friday.

Snow will continue tonight across north central Minnesota into the Arrowhead with heavy snowfall rates of around 1″/hour likely at least through Midnight.

A mixture of snow, sleet and rain will continue in the Twin Ports and east central Minnesota with lingering snow showers overnight.

Strong northeast winds with gusts of 30 to 50 mph will continue this evening near Lake Superior and in Duluth. Winds will diminish by Midnight tonight with winds shifting to the southwest.

Rain in northwest Wisconsin will diminish this evening with a few snow or rain showers overnight.

Wrap around snows are likely across the Northland on Friday with some rain possibly mixing in during the afternoon. Heavier snow showers/squalls are possible Friday but we’re not looking at a lot of accumulation, with additional daytime snow accumulations ranging from a trace to 2 inches.

Here’s my updated snowfall forecast thru 7 AM Friday.

Note — A few locations in northern Minnesota could see more than 8 inches of snow by 7 AM Friday, but I don’t think these will be very widespread.

Duluth area: Additional snowfall accumulations of 1 to 3 inches on top of the hill, and from a trace to 1″ closer to Lake Superior.

Widespread power outages in and around the Duluth area this afternoon.

80 active outages affecting 3,387 Minnesota Power customers as of 5:49 PM Thursday.

Duluth area — Snow or a mixture of precipitation consisting of rain, sleet and snow this evening with lingering snow showers after Midnight. Some freezing rain is also likely into early this evening in higher elevation inland from Lake Superior.

Snow showers will continue in the Northland on Friday as moisture wraps around the west/south side of an area of low pressure over northeast Minnesota. Some of the snow could be heavy for brief periods of time, and there could also be some rain that mixes with the snow especially in the afternoon.
