Persistent east wind (cooler near Lake Superior) into next week, milder temperatures inland; Several rain chances ahead

The pattern ahead looks fairly active (what else is new?) but the next few days will only see a few isolated rain showers in the Northland, but rain chances will be on the increase this weekend with steadier rains possible at times. Rain chances continue into next week as well.

As for temperatures, if you like milder temps then you won’t want to be near Lake Superior, this is due to an east wind which will likely continue for the next 5 to 7 days, those east winds coming off Lake Superior will help keep temperatures in the upper 30s and 40s closer to Lake Superior (say within about 15-20 miles of the lake, give or take a few) but if you get far enough inland (oh, say about 30 miles or so) then you’ll get back into milder temperatures which will consist of highs in the 50s and 60s through early next week.

Note — Locations near Lake Superior may also see some areas of low clouds and fog from time to time especially by this weekend as moisture begins to increase.

Pattern remains the same today with strong troughs to the east and over California with a strong ridge in between. The upper Midwest continues to be influenced more by the trough with N-NW flow aloft, but the ridge is close enough to where we’re seeing warmer temperatures spread far enough to the east to impact the upper Midwest today.

Near and under an upper-level ridge temperatures are well into the 80s today in southwest Canada, but the farther east you go the cooler it gets with temperatures only in the 40s today in upper Michigan as that area remains closer to an upper-level trough.

Temperatures in northern Minnesota were in the middle 60s to lower 70s today with lower 60s in northwest Wisconsin.

Note — High was 61 at the Duluth Airport today (May 3, 2023) this is the warmest temperature we’ve seen in Duluth since April 12th when the high was 69 degrees.

NAM 3km model radar forecast thru 7 AM Friday

As mentioned above it does look like will be seeing an active pattern setting up across the upper Midwest which will lead to several chances of rain this weekend into next week.

Here’s the rainfall forecast only thru 7 PM Sunday, May 7, 2023.

Temperatures look to stay on the milder side in the upper Midwest into next week, but this won’t be the case near Lake Superior where much cooler temperatures are likely.
