Highs in the 70s and 80s through the middle of next week with occasional lake breezes/cooler temps closer to Lake Superior; Dry through Memorial Day

A quiet weather pattern into at least early next week.

Mild to warm afternoons and comfortable nighttime temperatures ahead.

Sunshine should be plentiful through this weekend with southerly winds, but lake breezes (east wind) are likely at times within about 10 to 20 miles of Lake Superior for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Memorial Day, when those lake breezes occur temperatures will likely fall into the 50s for locations impacted by the lake breeze, but when the wind has less of an easterly component temperatures will likely climb into the 70s. The lake breeze is most likely to occur during the mid to late afternoon/evening hours over the next few days, so this could be a setup where we see warm temperatures near Lake Superior most of the day before a lake breeze blows through cooling temperatures a good 20 degrees or so during the latter part of the afternoon/evening hours.

No rain in the Northland at least through Memorial Day, but we could see the pattern break down a bit during the middle portion of next week which could allow a front to move far enough to the east to produce a few scattered showers in the Northland, but no widespread rains are expected through next weekend or through June 4 the way it looks now.

Note — Tonight will be on the chilly side again as temperatures fall into the 30s in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin with 40s farther to the west. Patchy frost is likely inland from Lake Superior in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin early Friday morning.

Still dealing with a lake breeze today but today’s lake breeze hasn’t been nearly as potent compared to the one 24 hours ago.

Lake breeze boundary late this afternoon extends from east of McGregor to Moose Lake to around Lake Nebagamon and Iron River. Temperatures near and to the south of this boundary are in the 70s this afternoon with cooler 50s in Superior to around 60 on top of the hill in Duluth today.

A big upper-level ridge in place over the area and this ridge won’t be moving at all through this weekend.

500mb heights near the core of this upper-level ridge will be running about 2 standard deviations above normal through this weekend, so this is a fairly strong ridge for late May.
