A strong cold front moved through the Northland on Tuesday bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms to much of the Northland. Rainfall totals of 1 to as much as 3 inches were reported and there was also some severe weather with some reports of wind damage, as well as some very large hail around the McGregor area.

Much cooler temperatures moved into the Northland today behind Tuesday’s system, with temperatures this afternoon running about -15 to -25 degrees cooler compared to Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures this afternoon were only in the middle 50s to lower 60s in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.

Looking ahead shows that will have highs in the 60s on Thursday, and mostly in the 70s Friday and Saturday although temperatures could be cooler near Lake Superior depending on how the wind direction sets up.

Note — There is a chance for patchy frost well inland from Lake Superior tonight, but more so Thursday night as we should see skies clear more compared to what will see tonight.

We could see a little rain in parts of the Northland Saturday into Sunday as a disturbance and cold front move east out of the Dakotas. This doesn’t look like a big system at the moment, and it also doesn’t look like it’ll be a widespread rain event.

Any rain that we do get tonight/early Thursday, and again this weekend looks pretty light, in fact the pattern ahead does look pretty dry again.

A lot of clouds covering the Northland today on the backside of Tuesday’s low-pressure system.

Goes-16 visible satellite loop from Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

An early fall-like air mass across the Northland today. The record breaking heat the last few days is long gone, and I’m pretty sure we won’t be seeing anymore 90s in our area again for the rest of this year.

Quite a range in temperatures this afternoon with 850mb temperatures of -2C over northwest Ontario to as warm as +27C in southern Wyoming.
