Happy New Year!
There’s some snow in the forecast but no major winter storms are expected here in the Northland through early next week, but the system this weekend could drop a couple inches of snow in our area.
Snowfall stats for the 2023-2024 snow season in Duluth (thru 4 PM Jan. 2)
Total: 7.8″
Normal: 36.7″
Departure: -28.9″ below normal
Percent of normal snowfall: 22% of normal
By this time last year, nearly 63″ of snow had fallen in Duluth. (62.9″)
An area of low pressure is expected to develop over the northern Plains and upper Midwest on Friday and this low combined with a cold front will generate enough lift to produce some snow beginning Friday evening and continuing into Saturday, and possibly all the way through Sunday, so this could end up being a fairly long duration snow event, but snowfall amounts don’t look overly impressive at this time with amounts mostly in that 1 to 4 range but a few 5 inch totals are possible especially along the North Shore of Lake Superior where we could see a bit of lake/terrain enhanced snowfall this weekend.
Temperature wise we’re looking at highs in the middle 20s to lower 30s Friday through Sunday with lows in the middle teens to low/mid 20s this weekend.
Here’s my preliminary snowfall forecast for Friday evening through Sunday morning.
Note — Changes in snowfall totals and gradients could change a bit since this event is still a few days away.

Before this weekend’s snow event gets here, we have a few snow showers on the way for tonight and Wednesday morning as a cold front moves through the area. Snowfall totals of a trace to 1″ are expected through Wednesday morning with up to 3″ of snow possible around the Hurley and Gile areas in northwest Wisconsin where some lake effect snow is likely on Wednesday.
HRRR model radar forecast through 10 AM Wednesday.

A larger system is still possible for the early to middle portion of next week (~January 8-10), but the track of this low is pretty far south/east of the Northland so we’re not looking at much snow out of that system for our area unless the low tracks farther northwest.

There is a chance that we could get a little more snow in the Northland early next week (Monday-Tuesday) as a trough digs southeast out of central Canada, but that trough approaching from Canada will also help keep that stronger southern wave over Texas from impacting our area.
