Temperature and Snowfall Stats for January and winter of 2023-2024

A mild winter continues with much below normal snowfall in the Northland.

Des Moines, Green Bay, Omaha, and Chicago are just a few cities that have had more snow this winter compared to what we’ve seen in Duluth so far this winter, while Dodge City, KS is only running -0.8 inches behind Duluth’s snowfall total this winter.

Average Temperatures and Departure from Normal in the Northland for January 2024 (thru the 27th)

Ashland, WI

Average: 19.1 degrees
Departure: +5.3 degrees above normal

Duluth, MN

Average: 14.6 degrees
Departure: +3.4 degrees above normal

Brainerd, MN

Average: 14.3 degrees
Departure: +3.8 degrees above normal

Hibbing, MN

Average: 11.5 degrees
Departure: +5.1 degrees above normal

International Falls, MN

Average: 11.1 degrees
Departure: +6.3 degrees above normal

No surprise here that the winter of 2023-2024 in the upper Midwest and in parts of the northern Plains has been a mild one so far, and in some locations a record mildest winter through late January.

One storm track we’ve seen this winter has been across the Midwest which has been where the stronger systems have tracked this winter, while another storm track has favored the upper Great Lakes where generally weaker clipper systems have moved through on occasion this winter. Overall, this is a pretty typical El Nino pattern that we’ve seen this winter.
