A warm February

It’s been a warm February not only in the Northland but elsewhere across the northern Plains and Midwest.

Average Temperature ranks by state for February 2024 (thru the 24th)

  • Minnesota – Warmest on record
  • Wisconsin – Warmest on record
  • Michigan – Warmest on record
  • Iowa – 2nd warmest on record
  • North Dakota – 3rd warmest on record

Note: Locally, Ashland is having its warmest February on record while Hibbing, Brainerd and International Falls are having their 2nd warmest February on record with a few days left to go. Meanwhile, Duluth is having its 4th warmest February on record thru the 24th.

Average monthly temperatures in the Northland are running some +13 to +15 degrees above normal this month — See below.

Ashland, WI: 29.6 degrees, +13.1 degrees above normal

Brainerd, MN: 29.0 degrees, +14.4 degrees above normal

Duluth, MN: 28.4 degrees, +13.7 degrees above normal

Hibbing, MN: 25.0 degrees, +15.2 degrees above normal

International Falls, MN: 24.3 degrees, +15.6 degrees above normal

Warmest February on record

Ashland: 26.9 degrees set in 1987 and 1954
Brainerd: 29.4 degrees set in 1948
Duluth: 31.3 degrees set in 1877
Hibbing: 28.3 degrees set in 1998
International Falls: 27.1 degrees set in 1998

This is pretty crazy!

96% of days this month have been warmer than average in Duluth compared to just 4% of days which have been colder than average this month.
