The forecast for this weekend in the Northland suggests predominantly dry conditions, yet an incoming system from the northwest might bring scattered showers to certain areas, primarily from Saturday evening through Sunday morning.
Looking forward, there’s an increased likelihood of rain from the middle to the end of next week, although this forecast is subject to change as it’s still some time away.
The weather system we’ve encountered today will persist, bringing showers and isolated thunderstorms into the evening, but conditions are expected to clear up later tonight.

Duluth experienced its first severe thunderstorm warning of the season late this afternoon, with alerts issued for potential winds reaching up to 60 mph.

Along with gusty winds, brief heavy downpours, and lightning, there were also reports of small hail in parts of Duluth during the strong thunderstorm late this afternoon. Hail sizes ranged from 0.25 inch to 0.50 inch in diameter, according to mPing reports.

Here are those hail reports from late Friday afternoon.

This afternoon, our area experienced minimal instability, with Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) values generally at or below 700 J/kg. However, this was sufficient, in conjunction with the modest sunshine and heating, to trigger scattered thunderstorms across parts of the Northland. With 500mb temperatures dropping to as low as -25 or -26C and lapse rates between 7.0-8.0 c/km, some of the more intense storms produced small hail and gusty winds.

Today’s weather setup featured a robust upper-level system moving southeast through the Northland area.

This weekend, expect warmer temperatures with highs ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Both Saturday and Sunday will experience these conditions, and due to an offshore wind direction, even areas near Lake Superior should enjoy the warmth.
Even warmer temperatures are anticipated to the west and south, with highs ranging from the low to mid-80s this weekend.
Note: The last instance of temperatures reaching at least 70 degrees in Duluth occurred on October 3rd, 2023. It is expected that Duluth will experience temperatures of 70 degrees again this coming Sunday.

Parts of northeast Minnesota, away from Lake Superior, may experience frost late tonight into early Saturday morning. A frost advisory is in effect from 1 AM to 8 AM Saturday, with temperatures potentially dropping to as low as 34 degrees.
