- Expect another round of gusty winds originating from the northeast on Friday, shifting to the southwest by Friday night and continuing into Saturday.
- Over the holiday weekend, a few showers are possible, but there is no expectation of widespread or continuous rain on any of those days.
- Duluth reached a high of 71 degrees today, Thursday, May 23rd, 2024. This marks the fourth day this month that temperatures have soared to 70 degrees or higher. On average, May sees six days with temperatures at or above 70 degrees.
A low-pressure system is expected to move northeast from central South Dakota into far northwest Minnesota by Friday afternoon. Southerly winds preceding this system will carry moisture northward into our region, while a lifting occluded front will move northeast, providing the necessary dynamics for rainfall in the Northland on Friday. Additionally, scattered showers are anticipated tonight, primarily impacting northern Minnesota.

Duluth area: Rain could occur at any time on Friday, with the highest likelihood from late morning to afternoon. The rain is expected to cease by late Friday afternoon or early evening.

Expected rainfall in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin through Friday evening ranges from approximately 0.10 inches to 0.75 inches, with localized areas potentially receiving nearly an inch.

The current weather system is not only generating showers and thunderstorms, some of which are severe, but it has also brought snowfall to parts of southern Montana and northern Wyoming. Today, there have been reports of snow accumulation ranging from 4 to 12 inches southwest of the Billings, MT area.

An upper-level trough is forecasted to move northeast from the northern Rockies across the upper Midwest on Friday. This system will provide additional lift to the region on that day.

On Friday, another weather setup will occur with dual jet streaks; one positioned well northwest of Minnesota and the other over western Minnesota. This configuration will bring about enhanced lift across the Northland on Friday.

The Twin Ports area will experience windy conditions from tonight until Saturday. Expect a northeast wind tonight and Friday, with gusts ranging from 25 to 45 mph. A shift in the wind direction to the southwest is anticipated Friday night, and these winds are predicted to persist into Saturday, with gusts between 15 to 35 mph.
