This morning, a small region in far northwest Wisconsin experienced a significant weather event. An area of thunderstorms emerged and remained stationary for several hours, resulting in heavy rainfall and a risk of flash flooding. Radar estimates indicate that approximately 2 to 4 inches of rain poured down in a brief period this morning, primarily in the far northern part of Douglas County, especially along and north of Highway 13.
This event was characterized by highly localized heavy rainfall. While much of Duluth received little to no rain this morning, Duluth Sky Harbor Airport recorded nearly an inch of rainfall, and Superior Airport reported nearly half an inch. Areas just east of Superior experienced significantly higher rainfall totals.
The positive update is that the intense rain and thunderstorms that affected far northwest Wisconsin this morning have weakened, with the rain band shifting eastward and moving away from the region early in the afternoon.
Radar loop ends 12:48 PM Monday, July 29, 2024.
