Today, a particularly dry air mass enveloped the northern Plains and upper Midwest, registering dew point temperatures in the teens to the 30s. This arid condition is expected to persist for some time.

The mix of strong winds and low humidity is expected to maintain heightened fire weather conditions in parts of the Northland on Wednesday and likely beyond, unless significant rainfall occurs.

There are no indications of significant rainfall in the Northland area, possibly extending into much of next week.

The persistent dry conditions are expected to exacerbate the drought in our region, and the risk of fire is likely to remain elevated at times.

Today, temperatures in the Northland were approximately 10 to 20 degrees lower than Monday’s. However, a shift is expected as a warmer air mass from the west moves eastward on Wednesday.

This afternoon, temperatures ranged from the mid-50s to around 60 in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. While this may seem significantly cooler compared to the recent warm spell, it is in fact quite typical for early October.

On Wednesday, warmer temperatures will make a comeback due to southerly winds preceding a cold front moving eastward from the Dakotas. High temperatures in the 70s are anticipated across most of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, with the far north of Minnesota seeing highs in the upper 60s.

On Wednesday, expect south to southwest winds to be quite gusty, with speeds ranging between 15 and 30 mph.
