-A light to moderate snow event will affect the Northland tonight into Sunday as an area of low pressure located between Watertown and Sisseton, SD, late this afternoon tracks east or slightly to the east-southeast, reaching near the Twin Cities around daybreak on Sunday. This low is then forecasted to track northeast, heading toward Marquette, MI, by Sunday evening.
-This system will bring widespread snow to northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin tonight and Sunday with the heaviest snow expected tonight through Sunday morning with scattered snow showers and flurries continuing Sunday night and Monday.
-Wind won’t be a big issue tonight, but as this low departs to the east, winds will increase out of the north to northwest with gusts of 15 to 35 mph Sunday morning into Monday. These gusty winds will cause areas of blowing snow as we get into Sunday morning lingering into Monday morning.

NAM 3km model simulated radar forecast through 12 AM Monday.

There really isn’t a significant amount of strong lift associated with this system crossing the upper Midwest tonight, but there is enough lift and moisture to produce snow, and with a cold airmass in place, snow that falls will be fluffy with pretty high snow-to-liquid ratios averaging 14:1 or higher.

500mb analysis from late Saturday afternoon reveals one trough moving out of the northern Plains and into the upper Midwest, while upstream there’s an upper low over northern Manitoba, Canada, and that upper low will drop south-southeast, moving over the Northland on Monday, and that feature could keep some snow showers and flurries going in parts of the Northland on Monday.
