-Snow tonight, with moderate to heavy snowfall rates of 0.50 to 0.75 inches per hour at times.
-Snow ends from southwest to northeast early Thursday morning.
-East winds near Lake Superior gusting to 25 mph will cause patchy blowing snow tonight.
-Gusty west winds on Thursday with gusts of 15 to 30 mph with areas of blowing snow.
-Another chance for snow Saturday although the greatest accumulations appear to be setting up just to our south.
Here’s my updated snowfall forecast as of late Wednesday afternoon.
Notes
- The quick movement of this system should keep snow totals from getting much higher than 3 to 5 inches; however, there is a chance for isolated amounts of 6 to 8 inches in some parts of northeast Minnesota. Confidence is low on where those amounts will occur (if they do), and just how widespread they will be, but just know the chance is there for a few locations to pick up more than 5 inches of snow tonight.
- Snow should be pretty fluffy with higher snowfall ratios of around 15:1 to 18:1 due to the amount of cold air in place.
- Duluth metro: 3 to 5 inches of snow by 6 AM Thursday. Snow begins tonight around 8 PM and diminishes early Thursday morning between 4 and 6 AM.
Winter Weather Headlines
- The Arrowhead of Minnesota, including Grand Marais, has been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning (pink area on the map), which is in effect until 6 AM Thursday.
- The rest of northeast Minnesota and much of northwest Wisconsin is under a Winter Weather Advisory (purple area on map) until 6 AM Thursday.
- Also of note is a Blizzard Warning (red area on the map) that is in effect for parts of western Upper Michigan from 10 AM CT Thursday to midnight CT Thursday night.
Through lifting northeast out of the northern Plains will provide the necessary lift to generate snow in the Northland tonight.

The patchy nature of the precipitation spreading northeast across Minnesota early this evening is definitely indicative of some convective-like structure, with heavier bursts of precipitation noted in the darker green colors on the loop.

Saturday Snow Chances
More snow is possible Saturday as another fast-moving wave tracks across the upper Midwest. Currently, the greatest chances for snow accumulations of 4 or more inches are mostly south of the Northland, but there still could be a few inches of snow on Saturday in parts of our area, generally along and south of Highway 2 in northeast Minnesota, including most of northwest Wisconsin.
