Another quick-hitting snow event for parts of northeast and east-central Minnesota and all of northwest Wisconsin this evening as a trough lifts northeast across the upper Midwest, with an area of enhanced lift out ahead of this trough supporting an area of heavier snowfall with rates of up to a half inch per hour.

Some modest warm air and moisture advection is also occurring ahead of this system today, which is helping to support this snow.

Here’s my updated snowfall forecast for tonight’s event.

-The quick movement of this system should keep snow totals from getting much higher than 2 inches, but there could be a few locations that do get around 3 to 3.5 inches of snow within that 1 to 2-inch zone, though those should be pretty isolated.

-Winds will be out of the east to northeast near Lake Superior tonight and out of the north to northeast on Saturday, and with plenty of open water and cold air in place, this could lead to some lake effect snow showers late tonight and Saturday, shifting from the North Shore and Duluth metro area tonight to the South Shore on Saturday. Note: Localized lake effect snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible, especially along the South Shore, east of Duluth.

-Wind gusts of 15 to 25 mph will occur at times through Sunday, with patchy blowing snow.

Steadiest snow occurs this evening, followed by lingering snow showers and flurries overnight into Saturday.

Temperatures today were running about 5 to 10 degrees warmer than Thursday afternoon’s temperatures in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, and around 15 degrees warmer in southern Minnesota.

Eventually, the Arctic air will win out again, but not on Saturday, as we will see temperatures in the 20s in northwest Wisconsin and in the teens across northern Minnesota. However, the Arctic air will be returning to the Northland, especially as we get to Sunday and into early to mid next week.
