Rain is expected in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin tonight and on Friday; however, it will gradually diminish from north to south by Friday afternoon.
Sufficient cold air moving into the backside of this system may result in rain mixing with or briefly changing to wet snow on Friday morning for areas inland from Lake Superior in northeast Minnesota and far northern Wisconsin.
The average snowfall in Duluth in May is 0.8 inches, so it’s not uncommon to see snow, especially in early May. The snowiest May on record was in 2019, with 13.3 inches of snow, and there was snowfall as late as May 19th that year.
Temperatures on Friday will be relatively cool, ranging from the 50s in far western regions to the 40s in other areas, including Duluth. However, warmer conditions will arrive on Saturday, with temperatures rising into the 60s. On Sunday, an east wind will lead to significantly cooler temperatures near Lake Superior, while inland areas will experience warmer conditions, with temperatures reaching the 60s and 70s.
Duluth area: Rain is expected to begin this evening before midnight and will persist into Friday, gradually diminishing during the afternoon. There is a possibility of a little wet snow on Friday morning in higher elevations atop the hill.

Precipitation amounts of up to half an inch or more are anticipated by Friday afternoon across portions of northeast and east-central Minnesota, extending into parts of northwest Wisconsin, with lower totals expected in the surrounding areas.

Snowfall accumulations of up to half an inch or less may occur Friday morning in areas of northeast Minnesota and far northern Wisconsin, away from the vicinity of Lake Superior.

Areas experiencing rain and mostly cloudy skies this afternoon recorded temperatures ranging from the 40s to around 50 degrees. However, in regions where conditions remained dry with occasional sunshine, temperatures rose into the 50s and 60s.
