Temperatures in Duluth might hit 80 degrees over the next few days, which is quite unusual for October.

Let’s explore some stats about 80-degree days during this month.

  • In October, Duluth averages zero days where the temperature hits 80 degrees or more.
  • The highest number of days with temperatures reaching 80 degrees or warmer in October is two, a record set in several years, including 2023, 1963, 1961, 1953, 1943, and 1922.

Winds in Duluth will be changing directions over the next few days. A warmer southerly wind is expected on Thursday, followed by a shift to a cooler easterly wind on Friday, before returning to a warm southerly direction for Saturday and Sunday. Highs are forecasted to reach the 70s and 80s on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, with cooler highs in the 60s on Friday.

On Thursday, a weak trough will move east into the Northland, bringing enough moisture, warm air, and instability to potentially trigger isolated to scattered showers and a few thunderstorms in parts of the region. The extent of how far south the rain will reach remains uncertain, but the better chances for rain seem to be in northeast Minnesota, with lower chances in eastern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. However, the NAM 3km model suggests the rain might extend slightly further south by Thursday evening.

NAM 3km model simulated radar forecast valid 7 AM Thursday to Midnight.

Computer models are showing a much drier trend for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin with the frontal passage this weekend. The front is expected to move across the Northland on Sunday, possibly bringing a few showers mainly to northern Minnesota, but it seems most of the area will stay dry as the front passes through.

The heaviest and most widespread rain this weekend is expected to develop over parts of the Dakotas and northwest Minnesota, with rainfall totals ranging from half an inch to over an inch.
