Rain chances for the weekend are decreasing in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Most of the area likely won’t see much rain on Sunday as a cold front moves through.
More widespread rain is expected this weekend in parts of the Dakotas and far northwest Minnesota, closer to the path of a strong surface low. These areas could see rainfall totals of 0.5 to 1 inch or more.
Much of northern and eastern Minnesota, along with northwest Wisconsin, are experiencing abnormally dry conditions, according to the drought monitor. A small area of moderate drought has also been noted around the Park Rapids region and nearby areas.
*Duluth is -1.17 inches below normal in precipitation since September 1st and -7.25 inches below normal since January 1st.

Soil moisture levels are quite low across much of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, as indicated by the red and orange areas.

Parts of northeast Minnesota have experienced scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms today, and these brief showers are expected to continue into the evening before tapering off overnight.

We’ve had some brief downpours today, but the showers are only impacting a small area in northeast Minnesota.

No record highs were reached in the Northland today, but it was still an unusually warm early October day.

-Today’s high of 81 in Hibbing was only the third time since 1938 that the temperature reached 80 degrees or more on October 2nd. The other years were 2023 and 1953.
Warm weather will persist through Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with highs reaching the 70s and 80s in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Near Lake Superior, it may be slightly cooler on Friday due to a northeast wind, though the winds don’t appear as strong as they were a few days ago.
