Warmer October in Northland: Trends and Records

So far this month, Duluth has recorded more days that are warmer than average compared to days that have been colder than average, and this trend looks to continue for the foreseeable future.

October has been unusually mild so far, with average temperatures in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin running 6 to 10 degrees above normal through the 12th.

International Falls, MN: +9.2 degrees above normal
Hibbing, MN: +8.8 degrees above normal
Brainerd, MN: +8.4 degrees above normal
Duluth, MN: +7.0 degrees above normal
Ashland, WI: +6.7 degrees above normal

A look at the warmest October on record

Note: Average temperatures at many of the locations listed below are exceeding the warmest October on record as of the 12th.

Brainerd: 56.3 degrees (1963)
Duluth: 55.9 degrees (1963)
Ashland: 55.3 degrees (1963)
International Falls: 53.6 degrees (1963)
Hibbing: 52.7 degrees (1947)

While temperatures have been generally mild this month, there have been a few short-lived bursts of cooler, more typical seasonal weather, causing much of the Northland to experience its first 28-degree freeze of the season.

Hibbing: 20 on the 8th
Brainerd: 24 on the 8th
Ashland: 25 on the 8th
Duluth: 28 on the 8th

In Duluth, October usually sees an average of 10 days with temperatures dipping to 32 degrees or lower, with the record being 24 days in 2002. However, this October 2025 has only had 2 days so far with lows at or below 32 degrees.
