Some areas got a dusting of snow today, but it stayed pretty light because of the cold, dry air.
By 5 PM today, the Duluth Airport had recorded 0.3 inches of snow, bringing January’s total to an even 12 inches—3.8 inches below the average through January 29th.
Expect more snow tonight into Friday morning, mainly along the South Shore of Lake Superior in far northern Wisconsin, where some convergence has set up. The western edge of that lake effect snow might get close to Duluth and Superior later this evening, but it will likely remain just to our east.

Note: More snow is headed for the Northland this Sunday, but it’s shaping up to be a light event with around an inch expected.
Guess what? More subzero temperatures across the Northland Thursday morning, with some of the coldest locations including -28 degrees in Seagull Lake, MN; -24 degrees in Ely, MN; -23 degrees in Cotton, MN; -20 degrees in Minong, WI; and Longville, MN.
On Thursday morning, Duluth saw an official low of -9 degrees, while Superior Airport hit -13 degrees, and Duluth Sky Harbor Airport registered -8 degrees.
Note: Duluth marked its 13th straight subzero low Thursday morning and will probably rack up two more before getting a short break from the deep freeze.
Lows tonight across the Northland will range from the single digits to 20s below zero with highs on Friday mostly in the single digits above zero.
Highs today were well below normal and in the single digits above zero in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.
Bitterly cold winds chill as low as -35 degrees are expected late this evening through Friday morning across northeast and east-central Minnesota.
It’s still plenty cold out there today, and the pattern won’t change much through Saturday morning. After that, though, we’ll start to tap into some of the milder air hanging over the western High Plains.
