Weekend Northland Weather: Storm Chances, Low Clouds and Fog

One of the big unknowns about the weather through Saturday is just how much rain we’ll see in the Northland.

And today, the computer models still don’t align very well.

As has been the trend for the past few days, the Euro forecast remains much drier, especially around Lake Superior and the Twin Ports area, with rainfall totals under 0.10 inches through Saturday evening, while heavier rains are expected at times farther west.

The NWS blend of models projects about 0.75 inches of rain in Duluth through Saturday evening, factoring in both wetter and drier model outcomes and averaging them to arrive at this estimate.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are starting to pop up across the Northland late this afternoon, with activity likely to become more widespread through the evening before tapering off overnight.

It’s uncertain how the lake breeze boundary will impact these showers and storms as they head toward Lake Superior. There’s a chance much of the rain could dissipate before reaching the lakeshore this evening, so we’ll just have to wait and see how it unfolds.

While severe weather is not expected to be widespread tonight, some storms may bring gusty winds up to 60 mph and hail about the size of a quarter (1″ in diameter). Heavy downpours are also likely in areas where storms develop.

There have been a lot of interesting features appearing on GOES-19 daytime cloud satellite imagery today.

1: A cumulus field inland from Lake Superior is beginning to develop into a few showers and thunderstorms late this afternoon.

2: Low clouds and fog are covering the southwest arm of Lake Superior, impacting the Canal Park and Wisconsin Point areas.

3: The pink areas on the satellite represent areas of high level cloudiness.

Easterly winds lingering near Lake Superior through the weekend may bring periods of fog and low clouds through at least Sunday morning, which could impact Saturday evening’s fireworks festivities in the Twin Ports area.

This afternoon’s webcam footage shows the fog lifting in Canal Park, with sunshine making a return later in the day. Still, given how the weather’s been today, conditions could easily change from one hour to the next.

Meanwhile, fog lingers over Wisconsin Point.
