Late Monday Through Wednesday: Better Chances for Showers and Storms

In the coming days, a cold front will move southeast into the upper Midwest and likely stall by Tuesday night into Wednesday. Moisture and instability gathering near the front, along with some energy moving through, will bring higher chances of showers and thunderstorms to parts of the Northland from late Monday afternoon through Wednesday.

From late Monday afternoon into the evening, rain is most likely in northern Minnesota, with the chances spreading farther south as we head into Tuesday and Wednesday.

Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms could develop across north-central Minnesota late Monday afternoon into the evening, bringing winds up to 60 mph and hail ranging from quarter to half-dollar size (1–1.25 inches in diameter).

Guidance is pointing to heavy rain, especially from Tuesday into Wednesday, though there are north-south differences in where the highest totals will land. In the areas that get the brunt of it, rainfall could top 1-2 inches by Wednesday evening with locally higher amounts possible.

This afternoon, temperatures climbed into the upper 70s and low to mid-80s across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, while the typical cooler-by-the-lake kept lakeside areas in the 60s.

Widespread 80s are expected across the Northland on Monday, with highs in the 70s and 80s on Tuesday. Onshore winds near Lake Superior will keep temperatures cooler on Monday, ranging from the 60s to low 70s within about 15–20 miles of the lake.

This afternoon, dew points were mostly in the 50s and lower 60s in our area, making it fairly comfortable for early July. On Monday, dew points will be mostly in the 60s, so it will feel a bit more humid.

Today’s mid- and upper-level weather pattern features a ridge over the southwestern U.S. and a trough over the Midwest. In recent days, the ridge was situated farther east, but it has since shifted westward.
