A cold front will move east from western Minnesota across the Northland tonight, heading out by mid-morning Tuesday. Ahead of it, southerly winds will pull warm, humid air north, while cooler, drier air follows behind on northwest winds. This shift in wind direction along the boundary will create strong convergence, likely sparking showers and thunderstorms in the Northland tonight.
In the Duluth area, showers and thunderstorms are most likely early Tuesday morning, between about 1 and 5 AM. Some storms could bring heavy downpours, but the risk of severe weather is low, with higher chances for that farther northwest until around midnight tonight.
As of late Monday afternoon, the 850mb moisture transport shows a good amount of moisture being drawn into the cold front this evening.
Higher tornado and supercell numbers is showing up from far southeast North Dakota into northwest and northern Minnesota late this afternoon, making this the area with the best chance for isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms until around midnight tonight. Damaging winds of 60-75 mph and large hail measuring 1-2 inches in diameter, or about the size of a hen’s egg, are the main threats, though an isolated tornado or two could also occur.
Northern Minnesota is expected to get the most rain from tonight’s front, with amounts ranging from 0.5 to over 1 inch. Rainfall is predicted to taper off farther south and east, including the North and South Shore, eastern Minnesota, and northwest Wisconsin.
Rainfall in the Duluth area could range from 0.15 to 0.5 inches by 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Energy is moving east over North Dakota this afternoon, which should bring some rain tonight to the Northland.

Today, there’s a temperature spread from north to south in our area, with mostly 70s in northern Minnesota and 80s further south, reaching 90 degrees in Brainerd this afternoon.
In the Twin Ports area today, temperatures varied from about 80 degrees at the Duluth Airport on top of the hill to between 65 and 70 degrees below the hill and nearer to Lake Superior, thanks to persistent east winds.
On Tuesday, a shift in the wind to the northwest (offshore) will bring warmer temperatures near Lake Superior, reaching the 70s, while inland areas cool down to the 60s and low 70s.
