Thursday’s cold front has moved well southeast of the Northland, but a secondary front is closely following from northern Minnesota this afternoon. It will continue moving southeast across the region this evening, bringing a few gusty showers and isolated thunderstorms. While severe weather is not expected, wind gusts could reach 30-40 mph in some areas.
Looks like we’ll get some dry weather this weekend, with just a few showers or storms possible early next week, but nothing too heavy.
In Duluth, August 2026 is approaching a 2-inch rainfall deficit, currently at -1.93 inches as of 4 PM on the 21st. The last measurable rainfall of a quarter inch or more occurred on August 4th (0.26″), nearly three weeks ago.
Note: If we receive any rain in the Twin Ports tonight, it is expected to fall between roughly 7 and 9 PM.

Several reports of large hail occurred with the storms late Thursday afternoon and evening in western parts of the Northland, which was somewhat unusual given the minimal mid-level lapse rates. However, the storms maintained a supercellular structure, likely compensating for the limited mid-level lapse rates.
