Upcoming Warming Trend in Northland Weather Forecast

We have one more subzero night ahead followed by a welcome respite from subzero temperatures that should last well into next week.

Lows tonight will be between -5 and -15 in the Northland, with slightly warmer temperatures near Lake Superior.

So far this winter, Duluth has had 34 subzero nights, close to the average of 35. We should meet the average by Friday morning.

February 2nd was the last time Duluth experienced an above-average temperature, but this is expected to end this weekend with a series of above-average temperatures into next week.

Most days this month have been colder than average in Duluth (90% of them).

The warming trend continued today, with temperatures in the Northland at 3 PM being approximately 15 to 20 degrees warmer than they were at the same time on Wednesday.

Temperatures in the Northland were in the 20s this afternoon. They will be similar on Friday, but will rise into the 30s and some 40s this weekend and into the middle of next week.

Green=ice, and there’s not much ice on Lake Superior, especially near the North Shore, while the South Shore has some ice according to satellite images.

About 27% of Lake Superior was covered in ice, whereas typically, it has around 40 to 45% ice coverage at this time of year.

An updated look at seasonal snowfall totals for the 2024-2025 snow season beginning on October 1st.

Sault Ste Marie, MI has received almost 170 inches of snow this season, which is 75 inches more than usual as of February 19th.

This winter, northern Minnesota has experienced mainly light snow from clipper systems, leading to snowfall totals that are much lower than usual.

A lack of big storms impacting the upper Midwest, with significant snow events coming out of the Rockies, really stands out this winter.
