Precipitation anomalies for Duluth, Minnesota
Month to date: -0.11″ below normal
Since March 1st: -0.21″ below normal
Since January 1st: -0.60″ below normal
Note: Precipitation levels in Duluth this year are not performing too poorly. While they are slightly below the average the deviation is not particularly drastic at this point.
The next opportunity for precipitation is associated with a strong upper-level low/trough that was situated over New Mexico today. This system is projected to move northeast across the southern and central Plains on Sunday, before advancing into the central and northern Great Lakes region on Monday.
The extent to which precipitation will spread north and west with this system remains uncertain, as has been the case for several days. However, parts of northwest Wisconsin are likely to experience some precipitation from this system Sunday night into Monday, with lower chances for northeast and east-central Minnesota, including Duluth.
The type of precipitation will also present challenges, particularly on Monday morning, as colder air wraps around the backside of this system. Temperatures, both aloft and at the surface, are expected to become marginally conducive for a transition from rain to wet snow for a few hours, coinciding with the strongest lift on the northwest side of this low-pressure system. The highest likelihood of wet snow occurring Monday morning will be over parts of northwest Wisconsin, with lower probabilities for northeast and-central Minnesota, including Duluth.
Looks dry in the Northland during the day Sunday with rain spreading north into northwest Wisconsin and far eastern Minnesota Sunday night. This precipitation will then continue in the aforementioned areas into Monday but will end from west to east Monday afternoon.
Duluth: If rain does occur, it is expected to begin early Monday morning, likely after 2 AM. Should wet snow develop, it appears to be most probable between 6 AM and 11 AM on Monday, before the precipitation concludes by Monday afternoon.

Precipitation amounts of approximately a quarter to half an inch or more are expected in northwest Wisconsin from Sunday night into Monday, with amounts decreasing to between a trace and about a quarter of an inch in northeast and east-central Minnesota.
Wet, slushy snowfall accumulations ranging from a trace to an inch are possible Monday morning in parts of northwest Wisconsin and adjacent areas of far eastern Minnesota, extending into the Arrowhead region.
Note: If snow does occur, it would need to fall quite heavily to begin accumulating, and secondly, it would need to continue snowing for an extended period to result in any accumulation. At this time, the likelihood of both scenarios occurring on Monday appears relatively low.
High temperatures in the Northland today remained approximately 5 degrees below the average for April 19th, ranging from the 40s to 50 degrees however, the sunshine was pleasant.
Note: The average monthly temperature for April 2025 was running just -0.5 degrees below average in Duluth as of April 18.
This month, 63% of days in Duluth have been cooler than average, while only 26% of days have been warmer than average.
High temperatures in the Northland (inland from Lake Superior) will reach the 50s to around 60 degrees on Sunday, but near Lake Superior, an easterly wind will develop throughout the day, which will help keep temperatures in the upper 30s and 40s within about 15 miles or so of Lake Superior.
