Record or near-record cold could hit the Northland on Sunday morning, with these marking the record low temperatures for May 10th.

Ashland, WI: 16 set in 1966
Brainerd, MN: 21 set in 1981
Hibbing, MN: 21 set in 1981
Duluth, MN: 23 set in 1981
International Falls, MN: 24 set in 1909 and 1981

From the list above, International Falls and possibly Hibbing have the best shot at getting close to their record low tomorrow morning.

Aside from a brief shower this evening and Sunday afternoon, most of the Northland should stay dry through Monday. By Monday night, however, a clipper system is expected to move through, bringing some rain from late Monday night into Tuesday. Rainfall amounts don’t appear to be significant, with totals generally between 0.05 and 0.25 inches.

The upper-level pattern is holding steady today, with a strong upper low over Ontario keeping the upper Midwest under a cool northwest flow aloft. This setup isn’t expected to change much through the middle of the coming week.

Warm weather blankets the southwest and southern U.S. today, with afternoon highs soaring into the 90s and even a few spots hitting the 100s. Temperatures in the 80s stretch as far north as Missouri and southern Illinois.

With the upper-level winds coming out of the northwest, all that heat will stay south and won’t reach the upper Midwest for at least the next five days.
