Today’s Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Light snow made it farther north than what I was expecting 24 hours ago.  The snow line basically ran from Longville to between Duluth and Two Harbors, most of the snow was very light and generally in the form of snow flurries, but there were a few brief heavier snow showers.  Little if any accumulation occurred Today with the snow melting on contact.  Sky conditions varied between mostly sunny north of the Iron Range to overcast south of the Range.  High temperatures were in the 30s to around 40 degrees.  Winds were out of the south or east at 5 to 15 mph.

Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (October 29)

Partly to mostly cloudy skies will cover the area Tonight with strong high pressure to our east and low pressure and an upper level trough over the Rockies and Southern/Central Plains.  Scattered snow and rain showers and possibly some drizzle will continue over portions of the Northland Tonight with little to no snow accumulation expected.  Lows will be in the 20s and 30s with a few teens possible in far Northern Minnesota.  Winds will be out of the south or east at 5 to 15 mph.

Wednesday and Wednesday Night (October 30)

Low pressure will head northeast across the Central Plains during this period.  Patchy light rain showers are possible in the area Tomorrow with a somewhat greater chance for rain showers Wednesday Night.  Highs will range from the 40s and 50s in Eastern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin to the 30s and 40s in Northern Minnesota.  Lows Tomorrow Night will be in the 30s and 40s.  Winds will be out of the south, east, or west at 10 to 15 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Thursday through Saturday (October 31-November 2)

Still looks like most of the Northland will get some rain at times on Halloween, however it doesn’t look quite as wet as it did yesterday.  Low pressure will pass east/northeast of the region Thursday and Friday, this system will deepen from 994-998mb to around 980mb between Thursday/Friday, the upper trough accompanying the low will also strengthen and become negatively tilted later this week.  Could see some lingering showers Friday and Saturday as the flow aloft turns NW once again.  High temperatures will be in the 40s and 50s on Thursday with lows mainly in the 30s.  Highs Friday and Saturday will be in the 40s with lows Friday Night mainly in the 30s.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  Medium.

(November 3-8)

Sunday (3rd) looks dry.  A new storm could affect the Upper Midwest between the 4th-6th with possible rain or snow.  Near to below average temperatures are forecast during this period.
