*NAEFS temperature outlook valid for January 26-February 1, 2014.

Red=Warmer than average temperatures.
Blues=Colder than average temperatures.
White areas=Near normal temperatures.

Yes the trend is for colder temperatures for the rest of January, but how cold?  This particular model thinks will still get shots of milder air so when you combine that with the cold shots of air you come up with seasonal temperatures as a whole during 26JAN-1FEB.

Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (January 18)

Same old story.  One clipper goes north, one goes south, one goes west, one goes north.  I think you get the picture.  Yup, another clipper Tonight but this one passes by to our north-east.  There will be some light snow and flurries around the Northland Tonight with most spots only picking up a dusting to half inch accumulation…Exception to this will be from the Iron Range – Borderland – to the Arrowhead where 1-3″ of snow could accumulate by dawn.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies are forecast with lows in the teens and 20s. Winds will be out of the southwest or west at 10 to 15 mph.

*RAP model precipitation accumulation forecast valid through 6 AM Sunday.  Anywhere form 0.01-0.10″ liquid equivalent amounts across the Northland Tonight…Fluffing up to a dusting to 2-3″ of snow by Sunday AM with the greatest amounts in far Northern Minnesota.

Sunday and Sunday Night (January 19)

A cold front will drop south and through the Northland Sunday Morning with high pressure building in from the northwest by Sunday Night.  A few flurries or snow showers could occur from time to time during this period under partly to mostly cloudy skies.  Highs will be in the teens and 20s, might even climb to around 30 in Southern parts of the area.  Colder air moves in Sunday Night with lows ranging from the single digits above to around 20 below.  Winds during this period will be out of the north or northwest at 10 to 20 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Monday through Wednesday (January 20-22)

Colder temperatures will occur this period with mainly dry weather for Monday and Tuesday.  Another clipper type system moves in Tuesday Night/Wednesday and that’ll be when our next opportunity to get a few flurries or snow showers will be.  Highs will be in the single digits below to single digits above zero from Monday-Wednesday with lows Monday Night in the teens, 20s, and 30s below.  Lows Tuesday Night will be in the single digits and teens below.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(January 23-28)

Below average temperatures are expected through this period with a shot or two of bitterly cold temperatures possible, although these extreme shots of cold air shouldn’t last too long.  NW flow aloft continues so we will continue to see the occasional clipper system drop south/east out of Northwest Canada, if those clippers take a favorable track, then we will see some minor snow events every now and then.
