The arctic flood gates are open for business once again. High pressure of 1036mb is building southeast out of Saskatchewan and Manitoba Province Today while a couple of disturbances drop S/SE through the Upper Midwest which has led to some snow showers and flurries around the region Today with generally minor accumulations with heavier snowfall of the lake effect variety affecting parts of the South Shore of Lake Superior late last night and This Morning. Temperatures This Afternoon were in the single digits below to single digits above zero with northerly winds at 5 to around 20 mph. Late Afternoon wind chills ranged from the single digits below to 20s below zero.

Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (January 20)
Clear to partly cloudy skies will be found in our area Tonight as high pressure moves over the Northern Plains. Bitterly cold temperatures will occur Tonight with lows in the teens, 20s, and 30s below. North or northwest winds are expected at 5 to 15 mph.
Tuesday and Tuesday Night (January 21)
High pressure moves off to the south/east this period while low pressure heads into the Northern Plains and then east/southeast from there. Partly to mostly cloudy skies can be expected this period with snow showers and flurries at times mainly from Tuesday PM through Tuesday Night. Highs will be in the single digits to around 10 above with lows in the single digits below to single digits above zero. Winds will be out of the west or south at 5 to 15 mph.

Wednesday through Friday (January 22-24)
A reinforcing shot of arctic air moves into the area Wednesday and Thursday as low pressure moves over the Great Lakes while high pressure builds south/southeast out of Central Canada. Snow showers and flurries are possible on Wednesday with mainly dry weather on Thursday. Snow showers and flurries could return on Friday thanks to another disturbance that’ll affect the Northland.
Highs on Wednesday will be in the single digits to lower teens. Highs on Thursday will be in the single digits below to single digits above zero. Highs on Friday will be in the teens. Lows Wednesday Night will be in the teens, 20s, and 30s below. Lows Thursday Night will be in the single digits and teens below.
Note: Snowfall amounts from Tuesday PM – Wednesday should only be around 1″, a few lucky spots might get up to 2″. The South Shore of Lake Superior may see another round of heavier lake effect snow from Wednesday into early Thursday as winds turn to the north.
