*Check this out!  6-10 day temperature forecast valid for February 3-7, 2014.  Percentages can’t go any higher, they are maxed out at 90% in parts of the Dakotas and Minnesota…In other words, expect the cold weather to continue.  The only spots that are forecast to have warmer than average temps in early February is in Northern Alaska and in parts of the Southeast U.S.  (Source, Climate Prediction Center)

Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

Low pressure centers of 996mb and 1012mb were over Hudson Bay and Eastern Alberta with high pressure averaging 1030mb covering the Central Plains and Ohio Valley.  Another day of cold temperatures and gusty winds in the Northland under mostly cloudy to mostly sunny skies.  Highs were in the single digits below to around zero so not as bitter as it was on Monday, but still well below average for late January. Winds were out of the west or southwest at 5 to 15 mph with gusts of 20-30+ mph occurring especially near Lake Superior.  Late Afternoon wind chills were in the teens and 20s below.

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (January 28)

Partly to mostly cloudy skies ought to continue with very cold temperatures with lows in the single digits, teens, and 20s below.  Winds will be out of the west at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts.  Wind chills are forecast to range from 25 below to 40 below.

Wednesday and Wednesday Night (January 29)

Low pressure stays north of border while a warm front and cold front push through the region.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected this period with a few snow showers or flurries possible.  Will finally go above 0 degrees Tomorrow with highs getting into the teens and even some 20s.  Lows Wednesday Night will range from around 10 below in far Northern Minnesota to the teens above zero in Northwest Wisconsin. South or southwest winds Tomorrow will become north/west Tomorrow Night.  Wind speeds will be in the 10 to 25 mph range.  Wind chill values of 25 below to 40 below are expected Tomorrow Morning.

Thursday through Saturday (January 30-February 1)

Looks mainly dry through this period.  Highs will be in the single digits with a few spots in the teens on Thursday.  Lows Thursday Night and Friday Night will be in the single digits, teens, and 20s below.

Below average temperatures will continue this period with another round of extreme cold possible between the 4th-7th.  Looks generally dry as well.
