-SREF model (15z run) snowfall accumulation forecast for late Tonight and Thursday. Looks like a widespread 1-3″ snow event south and southeast of the Twin Ports…We might get a dusting here in Duluth and Superior. Note: It wouldn’t surprise me if there are a few 4-5″ totals in Northwest Wisconsin, especially around the Exeland, Winter, Park Falls, Phillips and Ogema areas.
Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Low pressure of 994mb was over Western Ontario This Afternoon with a cold front moving into Northwest Minnesota. Gusty south winds and warm air advection was common ahead of this system Today with warmer daytime highs compared to previous days. Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (January 29)
A cold front will move through North Central Minnesota This Evening and will slow down a bit as it approaches Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin Overnight. Low pressure will pass well off to our north while another low heads east/southeast out of the Northern Rockies and into Northern Iowa/far Southern Minnesota by daybreak.
A few flurries or snow showers are possible over Northern Minnesota This Evening due to that cold front moving through. Little to no accumulation is expected though.
Snow should spread into the Southern portion of the Northland mainly after Midnight as that Northern Rockies system heads toward the Upper Midwest. At the moment it looks like most of this snow would fall along and south of a line from Brainerd to Ashland, although some flurries or a little light snow may extend as far north as the Twin Ports, Grand Rapids, and Cass Lake areas.
Lows Tonight will range from the single digits and teens below in far Northern Minnesota with single digits and teens above zero over Eastern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin. Winds will shift from the south/west to the north/west at 10 to 20 mph.
Thursday and Thursday Night (January 30)
An area of low pressure will track east-northeast out of the Upper Midwest and through the Central-Eastern Great Lakes region Tomorrow. Snow is possible in Southern areas Tomorrow Morning into early Tomorrow Afternoon before ending while it’ll stay dry in Northern Minnesota. The entire Northland will be dry Thursday Night.
Partly to mostly cloudy skies are forecast this period with highs ranging from around zero to the teens above. Lows Tomorrow Night will be in the single digits, teens, and 20s below. Northwest winds are expected at 10 to 20 mph.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: High.
Friday through Sunday (January 31-February 2)
Outside of a few flurries on Saturday this period looks pretty quiet around our area. Highs on Friday will range from zero to around 10 above. Highs on Saturday will be in the teens and 20s. Highs on Sunday will be in the single digits below to single digits above zero. Lows Friday Night and Saturday Night will range from the single digits below to the 20s below.
