Weather Summary for January 3, 2015
Location:  Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

The forecast verified quite nicely Today as the heaviest snow fell in far northern areas of Minnesota – basically where it was suppose to be.  Snowfall amounts tapered off considerably south of the Iron Range, again pretty much what was forecasted 24 hours ago.  As of late Afternoon low pressure of 1008mb was over central Indiana with an arctic front slicing southeast through the Upper Midwest with strong pressure rises of 2-3mb occurring immediately behind this front per meso-analysis.  High temperatures Today were in the teens and 20s with a few spots in northwest Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota climbing to 30 degrees!  Temperatures This Afternoon have fallen into the single digits in northern Minnesota as the arctic air moves in.  Winds Today were out of the southwest or north-northwest at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts.

Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (January 3)

Low pressure tracks into southeast Ontario with arctic high pressure building southeast into the northern Plains.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies will be found over the Northland Tonight with light snow and flurries at times.  Snow might become a little more widespread during the night in portions of northwest Wisconsin where a few inches of accumulation is possible, elsewhere there shouldn’t be much snow accumulation Tonight — maybe up to a half inch in a few locales.  Low temperatures will range from the teens and 20s below in northern Minnesota to the single digits below zero in northwest Wisconsin.  Winds will be out of the north or northwest at 10 to 20 mph.  Note:  There could be areas of blowing and drifting snow Tonight.

Sunday and Sunday Night (January 4)

Arctic high pressure will be centered to our west/southwest during this period.  Mostly clear to partly cloudy skies and frigid temperatures will cover the area with highs on Sunday in the single digits and teens below zero with lows Sunday Night in the teens and 20s below with a few 30s below even possible in northern Minnesota.  Winds will be out of the northwest or west at 10 to 20 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Monday through Wednesday (January 5-7)

Cold, cold, and more cold! Not much else going on around here in the world of weather.  Looks generally dry from Monday through Wednesday.  There will be a clipper system passing well southwest of the area from Monday-early Tuesday but the accumulating snow with that one stays off to our south, but a few fluffy flakes might push into southern portions of the Northland but that’s about it.

High temperatures will be in the single digits below to single digits above zero through this period with lows Monday Night and Tuesday Night in the single digits, teens, and 20s below.

Note:  Dangerously low wind chills will be common throughout the Northland beginning Tonight and lingering at least through next Wednesday.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(January 8-13)

Below average temperatures from the 8th-10th; near to possibly above average temperatures from the 11th-13th.  A minor snowfall event is possible on the 8th, and possibly again sometime during the 11th-13th time frame.

Note:  There will be periods of lake effect snow showers along the South Shore of Lake Superior starting Tonight and lasting off an on through much of the upcoming week as winds shift to the northwest from time to time.  Bayfield, Ashland, and Iron Counties have the greatest chance for lake effect snow, but there could also be some in Douglas County especially Tonight and Sunday Morning.
