There is potential for some decent precipitation amounts especially south and southeast of the Northland during the next 7 days. Unfortunately it looks like a lot of the heavier precipitation will remain south of our local area.
Weather Summary for April 4, 2015
Location: Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
A cold front was over extreme Southern Minnesota early This Evening with high pressure of 1026mb over Western Manitoba. Some parts of the area did get a dusting of snow early This Morning otherwise we saw mostly sunny to partly sunny skies during the day with highs in the 30s and 40s. Winds were out of the west or northwest at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts.

Short Term Forecast – Confidence: Medium.
Tonight (April 4)
A frontal boundary will turn stationary over far Southern Minnesota while high pressure remains off to our northwest. Partly to mostly cloudy skies will be found in our area Tonight with a chance for some light snow or flurries mainly in far Southern areas although I think most of us stay dry Tonight. Low temperatures will be in the 20s to around 30 degrees with teens and even some single digits possible in far Northern Minnesota. Winds will turn to the east or northeast at 5 to 15 mph.
Sunday and Sunday Night (April 5)
High pressure will be centered to our north while a frontal boundary stays put along the Iowa-Minnesota border.
A strong temperature gradient will be in place Tomorrow with temperatures ranging from the teens in Ontario to the 70s and maybe even some 80s across the Central Plains. Minnesota will sit between the real cold air to our north and early summer like warmth well to our south — This clash in airmasses combined with upper level disturbances which will move east/southeast out of the Northern Plains could lead to some light rain mainly in Southern areas Tomorrow and perhaps some wet snow or a rain/snow mix Sunday Night again mainly in Southern areas.
Partly to mostly cloudy skies are forecast with highs Sunday in the 30s and 40s with lows Sunday Night will be mainly in the 20s. East or northeast winds are expected this period at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts possible near Lake Superior.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: Low to Medium.
Monday through Wednesday (April 6-8)
Not much change in the overall weather pattern from early-mid week; A frontal boundary remains well to our south while high pressure covers Central and Eastern Canada. There could be some snow or a rain/snow mix at times during this period but the best chances for this precipitation should remain over Southern areas as dry air comes off that high to our north which should limit how far north any precipitation will get.
High temperatures will be in the 30s to around 40 degrees on Monday and Wednesday and mainly in the 30s on Tuesday. Lows Monday Night and Tuesday Night will be in the 20s to around 30 degrees.
Long Range Forecast – Confidence: Low to Medium.
(April 9-14)
A storm system is forecast to track out of the Rockies and into the Central Plains late this week. Computer models are in very poor agreement on where this storm will track once it comes out into the Plains. A few models take this system north into the Upper Midwest while others keep it much farther south. Note: We have not seen a major storm around this area in months, so the more northerly track that some computer models are showing Today doesn’t fit the pattern/trends that we have seen.
So for now will just have to wait and see how the computer models handle this system in coming days.
Should this storm hit the Northland it looks like it would be warm enough for the precipitation to fall as rain and some of the rain could be heavy — The time period for this possible storm would be from Thursday-Saturday (9th-11th)
Another system could arrive sometime around the 13th-14th with a chance for some rain.
Near to below average temperatures are forecast from the 9th-14th.
