Precipitation Departure map for the week of May 27, 2018 — One of the big weather stories last week were the frequent rainfalls that hit parts of the Northland. Total rainfall for the week ranged from 2 inches to over 5 inches with the highest totals found near Lake Superior from Two Harbors and Duluth, east to the South Shore. Farther north, International Falls had 1.51 inches of rain last week which is still a good amount of rain over a 7-day period.

•Wettest June 2 on record at Superior, Wisconsin — Total rainfall on Saturday was 3.88 inches. The previous wettest June 2 was in 2014 with 1.12 inches of rain.
Weather Synopsis
Another cool day in most of the area today as widespread clouds lingered most of the day behind an area of low pressure which was north of Lake Superior this afternoon. Light rain continued today in far northeast Minnesota with patchy drizzle for the Iron Range, Twin Ports and northwest Wisconsin areas. Farther west, skies were clearing nicely this afternoon, and temperatures have responded with 4 PM temperatures in the mid to upper 60s in the Brainerd area, but temperatures elsewhere thanks to the clouds were in the 50s. A gusty northwest wind today from 10 to 25 mph.
Clearing skies from west to east this evening over most of the Northland while far northeast Minnesota will be dealing with overcast skies and more light rain or drizzle through the evening hours. Lows tonight ranging from around 40 to 50 degrees.
Partly to mostly sunny skies on the way for Monday with highs ranging from the 60s in far northern Minnesota to the 70s elsewhere while the Brainerd area could be up close to 80 degrees. Northwest wind at 10 to 20 mph with a few higher gusts possible. All in all not a bad Monday, and we should have more sunshine on Monday compared to what we had over the weekend.
Changes take place once again for Tuesday and Wednesday as the east wind returns, although it doesn’t look as strong as it was this past Friday or Saturday, but still strong enough to produce cool temperatures near Lake Superior Tuesday and Wednesday with highs probably staying in the 50s, but inland locations are expected to have high temperatures in the upper 60s to middle 70s for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Low pressure approaching from the northern Plains could produce some more showers in parts of the Northland from late Tuesday night into Wednesday — A decent amount of elevated instability is forecast to move into parts of the area late Tuesday night through Wednesday and be accompanied by steep mid level lapse rates greater than 7.0 c/km especially near and south of the Highway 2 corridor in northeast Minnesota and over all of northwest Wisconsin. 700mb temperatures are expected to be up to around +11 or +12C over the southwest half of Minnesota on Wednesday which could keep that area capped, so what may happen is for scattered thunderstorms to develop north of this cap while impacting portions of central and eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin, some of this activity could extend far enough north to impact parts of the Northland as well.
