Tonight, will be bitterly cold across the Northland with lows in the 20s and 30s below zero with a chance for a few 40s below in the typical cold spots. Very cold temperatures will stick around Friday with highs only in the single digits below to single digits above zero. We do warm up briefly on Saturday with high temperatures in the 20s, but another shot of cold arctic air returns Sunday and Monday, but this may be our last shot of arctic air for a little while at least, as it does look a little warmer next week beginning after Monday. The pattern ahead also looks a lot quieter in our area from this weekend through much of next week.
- WIND CHILL ADVISORY is in effect through late Friday morning for all of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin including the cities of International Falls, Bigfork, Grand Rapids, Cass Lake, Walker, Pine River, Brainerd, Hill City, Aitkin, McGregor, Pine City, Hinckley, Moose Lake, Cloquet, Duluth, Hibbing, Cook, Crane Lake, Ely, Two Harbors, Isabella, Silver Bay, Lutsen, Grand Marais, Hovland, Superior, Solon Springs, Danbury, Grantsburg, Siren, Minong, Shell Lake, Spooner, Port Wing, Bayfield, Washburn, Hayward, Winter, Ashland and Hurley. Impacts: Wind chills as low as 25 to 40 below zero.
Lake effect snow showers will continue this evening along the South Shore of Lake Superior affecting portions of Ashland and Iron County, but as winds become southerly on Friday this will push any lake effect snow back out over Lake Superior and possibly into the Arrowhead of Minnesota from around Lutsen to Grand Portage later in the day Friday.
A strong low-level jet out of the SW will lead to a period of strong warm air advection in the Northland Friday night which will set the stage for a brief period of snow which looks to affect much of our area, but snow accumulations look pretty minimal with many of us only picking up a half inch or less of snow, except for areas near the Ontario border and Arrowhead where up to 2″ of snow may accumulate.

With the up and down temperatures ahead, we will have to deal with gusty winds. First from the south Friday night, then out of the west-southwest on Saturday which will be followed by a northwest wind for Saturday night. Wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph with higher gusts are possible across the Northland from Friday night through Saturday night.
