The official snowfall total in Duluth from today’s clipper was 1.9 inches, this brings our monthly total to 14.9″ which is +4.7″ above normal to date. Our annual snowfall total for the winter of 2021-22 is at 46.4″, this is +0.6″ above normal to date.
Snow is done, now comes the cold, and this next round of cold arctic air sticks around into Friday morning, with Wednesday night and Thursday being the coldest portion of this latest round of arctic air.
Temperatures warm a bit Friday-Saturday, and yes you guessed it along with these ‘warmer’ temps will come a little snow Friday evening-early Saturday, this may be followed by another round of arctic air for early next week.
***BREAKING*** For the first time this year, and for the first time since Christmas Eve (December 24, 2021) the temperature has risen above the freezing mark at Duluth, Minnesota, with a temperature of 33 degrees at the Airport at 5 PM today, Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
Strong northwest winds are spreading south/east out of the Northern Plains and into the upper Midwest late this afternoon in wake of today’s low-pressure system. Those red and purple icons on the image below represent wind gusts of >35 mph as of 4 PM today.
Strong northwest winds are likely tonight into Wednesday morning in the Northland with wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts to 50 mph possible along the North Shore of Lake Superior.
WINTER WEATHER ALERTS
- WINTER STORM WARNINGS AND ADVISORIES remain in effect for parts of northern Minnesota including the North Shore and Arrowhead. IMPACTS — Plan on slippery road conditions. Strong northwest winds gusting as high as 45 mph. Areas of blowing snow with reduced visibilities. Additional snowfall accumulations of less than an inch.
- WIND CHILL ADVISORY is in effect for all of north-central, east-central and northeast Minnesota including the cities of International Falls, Bigfork, Grand Rapids, Cass Lake, Walker, Pine River, Brainerd, Hill City, Aitkin, McGregor, Pine City, Hinckley, Moose Lake, Cloquet, Duluth, Hibbing, Virginia, Cook, Orr, Crane Lake, Ely, Two Harbors, Isabella, Silver Bay and Grand Marais. IMPACTS — Wind chills as low as 30 below zero from late tonight into early Wednesday afternoon.
Frigid wind chills beginning late tonight and continuing at least into Thursday afternoon, but more than likely right into Friday morning.
The coldest wind chills for the Northland are expected Wednesday night-Thursday morning (chills of -25 to -45)

SOUTH SHORE LAKE EFFECT SNOW
Will likely see some lake effect snow along portions of the South Shore of Lake Superior later tonight and into the day Wednesday, and there’s even a chance we may see a gravity wave develop over western Lake Superior which may focus an area of accumulating snow over parts of Douglas and Bayfield County in northwest Wisconsin from Wednesday morning (after 6 AM) into early Wednesday afternoon.
A few snow showers and flurries are possible over the rest of the Northland away from the South Shore for tonight as much colder air works into the area.

Wednesday night/Thursday morning looks like the coldest portion of this arctic blast with temperatures of -15 to -30 degrees in much of the Northland.
Daytime highs Wednesday and Thursday will only be in the single digits below to single digits above zero across the Northland.
